An Ecology of Beasts

An Ecology of Beasts is Common Index’s first in-person gathering, soon at BASE Milano.

Following our first gathering hosted by TXT Studio, we've been invited by BASE Milano during Design Week (20-26 April) as part of HELLO DARKNESS.
Entering the shadow zones of the present, the project treats darkness not as a void, but as an active ecological condition. The unseen edges of our systems become spaces for collective creation, where instability is not resolved, but inhabited. Through a shared bestiary and a generative installation, uncertainty becomes generative ground. Multiple imaginaries coexist within a non-hierarchical structure, forming a living ecology shaped by relation rather than control.

Multiple imaginaries coexist within a non-hierarchical structure, forming a living ecology shaped by relation rather than control. Opening on Saturday, April 20 at 6:30 pm, the event brings together friends, collaborators, and first-time visitors in a shared space. An environment shaped by installations, music, people, and a few drinks. The exhibition, developed in close collaboration with Sole Studio, was shaped through shared intuition, dialogue, and care, defining the spatial conditions in which the event takes place. The installation will follow the BASE Milano's schedule, remain open throughout the weekend, January 24 and 25.

A beast for each creative mind. At the heart of the project is a collective experiment that reflects the diversity of the community we move within. Through an open call, participants were invited to draw a card from a bestiary deck and reinterpret the creature they received through their creative minds. The resulting works will be screened during the event and gathered into a shared index of creatures, an evolving archive of forms, interpretations, and encounters.

We, Common Index, bring an interactive installation that shapes the environment in which these creatures exist: visitors’ presence, movement, and sound ripple through the space, allowing the creatures to influence one another and transform together, weaving an ever-changing, shared ecosystem.

We are happy to announce the participants
